Roughly an hour after John Lennon’s assassination, NBC reporter Brian Ross described a taxi driver witness, who rushed to the scene and saw Lennon on the ground with blood coming from his mouth and chest. This does not tally with the official narrative. This taxi driver recollection was never repeated again in the media. Like alleged witness Carrie Rouse, this particular witness was buried deep down the memory hole.
A taxi driver called Richard Peterson then emerged in Jack Jones 1992 book. Peterson stated he saw Chapman fire at Lennon, but later revealed he did not see Lennon being struck. Peterson claimed he left his taxi by the Dakota sidewalk and ran off for help.
No witnesses or police officers can ever recall seeing a yellow taxi parked outside the Dakota after John Lennon was shot. Peterson later embellished his story, claiming in 2021 that he heard Chapman call out to Lennon.
Detective Hoffman later interviewed a couple who lived at the Dakota. They told him that after hearing shots, they looked out of their window and saw a male get into a yellow taxi and leave. Other witnesses also recall seeing a yellow taxi screech off at top speed down 72nd street after hearing gunfire.
